GENERALITIES

The geotechnical study of the ground for foundations problems, slopes stability, support works, etc., nowadays finds more and more applications.

The new laws and the technical and economical aspects of a project impose the preventive knowledge of the geomechanical characteristics of the ground.

Penetrometric techniques allow to obtain valid informations at low cost and less waste of time.

The methods most used are:

Static penetrometric test (CPT/CPTU)
Dynamic continuous test (DP)
Dynamic point by point test (SPT)

SPT TEST

CPT/CPTU TEST

DP TEST

needs a drilling equipment and it is particularly expensive, furthermore it is not normally executed in fine soils.

gives particular satisfying data in almost all grounds, but cannot be used in gravely layers without damage risks. The use of the piezocone (electrical probe with a water pore pressure sensor) allows to obtain useful data for geological and hydrogeological purposes (CPTU test).

can be used also in gravely soils but it is not normally executed in low consistency cohesive grounds such as silt, clay, peat.

The efficiency of the DPSH penetrometer has been measured at two different sites in soils ranging between sand and gravel and unsaturated silty clay.

The average measured efficiency (73%) allows to normalize the measured N20 values simplifying the correlations with other in situ measurements and mainly with NSPT.

As a consequence, every time that an investigation has to be carried out, it arises the problem to choose what penetrometer have to be brought on site. Without considering the SPT test, that needs a drilling equipment, the idea to execute the dynamic and static continuous tests with the same penetrometer allows to solve the above mentionned problem.

With the Pagani Geotechnical Equipments solutions ONE OPERATOR can execute complete testing, including the anchoring and data recording, in the worst conditions and places.
